8 Tech predictions for 2009

It’s that time of year — looking back on the best products or apps, looking ahead at what is (or may be) to come. PC Magazine gets right in there with eight tech predictions for the coming year.
The first seven are ones author Tim Bajarin thinks are seriously likely, while the eighth needs to have all the stars aligned just right:
- Windows 7 will revive the tech doldrums by Q3, driving businesses and consumers to new PC purchases. (We’ll all be desperate for new stuff by then right?);
- Tech industry will lead the economic recovery, moving forward by Q3;
- PC technology and communications are likely be at the heart of new ventures by laid-off professionals starting their own small businesses;
- Netbook sales will double in 2009 as people look for cheaper laptops with more mobility;
- Smartphones will gain market share. They are “simply indispensable tools” and market share will continue to grow in the next few years;
- Android will expand its reach going beyond smartphones to other devices such as set-top boxes and digital televisions;
- Apple market share in computers and smartphones will grow;
- Microsoft will make a bid for RIM and use it to enhance and solidify the company’s enterprise smartphone position.
