Internet Archive challenges Google
The Internet Archive has a project called the Open Content Alliance
Its purpose is to open the nation’s library collections to universal web search and make materials broadly available. A number of major library systems, including the Boston Public Library and Smithsonian have signed on.
To date, 80 libraries and research institutions have joined the Open Content Alliance. These libraries want to avoid Google’s or Microsoft’s digitization projects which place many restrictions on access.
“The OCA will encourage the greatest possible degree of access to and reuse of collections in the archive, while respecting the content owners and contributors,” they say.
