New HyperWords Firefox extension
Posted by Jacque on September 14th, 2007
HyperWords Firefox extension was new to me, and thank you Amit Agarwal for bringing it to everyone’s attention. For old hands, there is a new version in beta (3.0) to download.
Just plain text on any web page can now be selected and then you can choose among many options such as various search engines, multiple reference services, translate to/from a selection of languages, and more. The information will show up right in your current webpage in a new window. See the image below for an example of how this looks.
Once HyperWords is installed you will want to set your preferences so the extension works the way you want it to. There are multiple options: layout, behavior, language, conversion, other. There is also a user guide available from HyperWords, and check out the video for a quick demonstration.

Here’s a tip I learned from experience: if you use the Firefox “add to search bar” extension which allows you to create a drop-down menu of search options (besides Google, I like Ask, Flickr, everystockphoto, Wikipedia and others), you need to change the HyperWords options when you add that extension In the layout options section, uncheck “search” to maintain your customized search menu.
