Project Censored — for news ignored by mass media

Posted by Jacque on July 8th, 2007

censored.pngWhen the mass media turns to celebrity gossip instead of important national and international news stories, Project Censored attempts to enlighten readers.

Their website features a quote from Walter Cronkite: “Project Censored is one of the organizations that we should listen to, to be assured that our newspapers and our broadcasting outlets are practicing thorough and ethical journalism.”

Currently in its thirty-first year, Project Censored selects twenty-five stories to publish each year from hundreds of possible candidates, giving them the light of day they might otherwise never have had.

Here’s a sample from 2007 – the top 10 stories

  1. Future of Internet Debate Ignored by Media
  2. Halliburton Charged with Selling Nuclear Technologies to Iran
  3. Oceans of the World in Extreme Danger
  4. Hunger and Homelessness Increasing in the US
  5. High-Tech Genocide in Congo
  6. Federal Whistleblower Protection in Jeopardy
  7. US Operatives Torture Detainees to Death in Afghanistan and Iraq
  8. Pentagon Exempt from Freedom of Information Act
  9. The World Bank Funds Israel-Palestine Wall
  10. Expanded Air War in Iraq Kills More Civilians
