LSTA and IMLS funding face dip from President’s request
From Library Journal, news that a House subcommittee has recommended a $4 million reduction to President Bush’s request of $171.5 million for the FY 2008 Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) state grant program on which so many libraries depend.
If the subcommittee’s budget proceeds, it will be difficult for the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), which administers the program, to implement a 2003 law aimed at more equitably distributing grants.
IMLS will also be hard pressed to fulfill its new research responsibilities. IMLS had requested $3.5 million for research and statistics, including $1 million to fulfill the research responsibilities of the U.S. National Commission on Libraries and Information Science (NCLIS), which is scheduled for elimination, and $2.5 million to do work being assigned it that is currently completed by the Department of Education.
LSTA funding has generally been good under the Bush administration.
