E-resources in libraries; Database, content information companies’ future

Posted by Jacque on May 22nd, 2007

blue-tech.jpgLibrary Journal for 5/15/07 has two (at least) very interesting articles.

Investing in Digital
Librarians face challenges in the e-resource arena in order to make users’ needs and expectations central to library services.  Author Jill E. Grogg says, “At lightning speed, access is becoming primarily online.  Libraries will continue to see budgets devoted to print shrink and e-resources rise.  Several new initiatives and partnerships point to librarian, publisher, and vendor solutions to the challenges of electronic resources.”

Not Your Family Farm
The information industry added value with unique content and custom tools as large search engines entered the market.  With respect to the database and information content fields, this article asks, “Can the family database ‘farm’ survive next to the giant data-businesses?  Even the largest companies in the database marketplace are feeling pressure from Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft.”

The article contains a nice chart of firms, their database services, and company profiles.
