Among the reasons they predict a big impact:

  • Highest quality video experience
  • Developers and graphic designers can play together
  • Least expensive way to stream video files over the Internet at best quality possible
  • Built to allow mashups

The founder and chief scientist of Oblong Industries, John Underkoffler, says it’s time to say good-bye to the mouse in favor of his company’s operating system based on human-hand gesturing that allows the user to explore in a 3D plane.

Remember Tom Cruise in the Minority Report?  Underkofffler’s production team created the futuristic Washington headquarters portrayed in the film and came just shy of actually building the gestural interface technology, he says.  And while you are looking at the C|net story, take a look at “The Big Picture” in the right-hand column to see a visual tool that shows the news as it relates to a variety of areas.

Another C|net news article notes that Oblong could create applications for air traffic control or for groups visually disseminating large and complicated data sets.   Microsoft also been experimenting with gestural interface through its TouchLight technology.
