Blackboard patent pledge greeted with mixed reactions
Newsforge says that Blackboard, one of the major providers of educational content management systems, has pledged not to assert its patents against open source elearning projects and companies. The pledge also covers so-called “home-grown” learning systems — ones developed in-house by educational institutions. However, the pledge includes open source solutions only so long as they are not bundled with proprietary software, which has received mixed reactions, with many open source projects acknowledging the spirit of the gesture while expressing skepticism about the results.

box-logo.pngThe folks at Box.net tell us that it was originally founded in 2005 as a college business project with a vision of making physical storage devices obsolete. Launched officially in March of 2006, Box.net currently provides secure online file storage and sharing functionality to over 500,000 registered users, serving files to millions of people around the world.  Box.net just recently integrated Zoho Writer as a way to edit word documents from within a Box account.  We talked about Zoho recently.
