Askville by Amazon

Posted by Jacque on 29th December 2006

askville-logo.gifI missed the original launch of Askville by Amazon — apparently on Dec. 8 — but find that announcements are beginning to appear around the blogosphere.   This new answer service says, “ask a question, get real answers from real people”   But, I must point out, not necessarily from experts.

How does it work?  Here’s some information from the FAQ:

Just type in your question in the big box with the blinking cursor and click on the Ask the Community button. Keep in mind you have a 120 character limit for your question title.  This will send you to the Question page.  You will have the option of submitting additional details (1,000 character limit) about your question to help the community answer your question.  Create a topic for your question or choose from the list of suggested topics [this is required].  Click on the “Ask the Community” button and you’re all ready to go.

As a librarian leary of the potential for incomplete, incorrect, and just plain misinformation online, I worry about this type of service.  It seems inevitable, however, that some will turn to an online “community” for certain types of answers. I’ve read a number of studies showing that people tend to turn first to their friends and neighbors for information, and the Web has become a type of neighborhood for many.

This is not the place to be sure of a correct or authoritative answer to a question — try your reference librarian.  Depending on the nature of your question, however, you may be satisfied with having the opinion of the participants.  Just remember, their level of expertise can only be guessed at.
